A Caterpillar Builds a Chrysalis

The caterpillar will shed its skin one last time and a chrysalis will form.  Inside the chrysalis new cells grow to become a butterfly.

A chrysalis is like a small room where the caterpillar takes a nap and then it dies.   Sometimes a chrysalis is called a cocoon.

This is where the magic takes place.  The dead caterpillar cells become imaginal cells which grow and grow. Within a few days a butterfly emerges.

Watch another video to see how most of the caterpillar cells die and the imaginal cells begin to grow.
